Day 4: The next stop on my trip was to Savannah, Georgia! A quick early afternoon Delta flight out from Atlanta got me to Savannah within an hour. I waited a bit for my Uber to come pick me up, but luckily, the city is only a 20 minute ride away. You could rent a car, but since everything is so walkable I opted not to get a rental (also, car rentals are outrageous). I arrived at my cute little Airbnb, right next to the Cathedral! I would highly recommend staying there, if you’re looking for a historical and charming place to sleep. It was a close walk to everything like the riverfront and the biggest park.
With the afternoon to myself, I decided to walk around the city. Since the Cathedral was across the street, I decided to walk there first. The architecture and decor of churches are unmatched. Always cool to see the effort people put into building something so beautiful! Up next was walking towards the riverfront. My friend had recommended this place called Wet Willie’s for a boozy slushie and it was a nice Memorial Day afternoon, so why not? Similar to New Orlean’s, you can take your drinks to go. I sat on a bench facing the riverfront and enjoyed my slushie as I people watched. You can walk along the riverfront and see the ships and boats that come through.

I’m not sure if it was because of Memorial Day, COVID, or just weird hours, but many of the places my friends had recommended were closed on the Monday/Tuesday I was there. After my walk on the riverfront, I decided to walk towards my airbnb and see what options were around. I opted to try out this restaurant called Sorry Charlie’s. It’s an oyster bar and sometimes I like oysters (texture thing maybe?)… I decided on the fried oyster po boy and it was actually very good. A sandwich with mac&cheese and a frozen boozy, you really can’t go wrong!

The night was still young, so I decided to book a ghost tour that night. I’m not sure why I thought it was a good idea, given I was staying by myself in an Airbnb, but I digress. Anyway, I headed back to my Airbnb to put on pants since it actually cooled off at night in Savannah. Surprisingly, the weather was pretty nice there and not as swampy/hot as I expected. From my airbnb, I made my trek to Johnson Square to meet up with the Dead of Night Tour by Ghost City Tours. It was a 90 minute walking tour through the city, where apparently you could’ve brought your own drinks. I made my first new friend this trip as we were the only solo people on this tour (Hey Gabs!). Even when you’re travelling alone, you can always make new friends so you’re never really alone! The tour was interesting, maybe a tad on the long side given it was a late night one. It is cool to learn about the history of the city and all that had happened possibly at one point. However, if you have trouble sleeping, the tour might not be for you. I ended up staying up til 2-3 AM trying to fall asleep because the silence was just too eerie. Eventually, I played some Gilmore Girls on the tv and finally fell asleep. On my tour, we actually stopped outside of the Cathedral and there are no known hauntings there, BUT that was not enough assurance to not fall asleep easily that night.
Day 5: What was a long night for me and one of the few days I actually took off during my trip, I grabbed some coffee downstairs at the Mirabelle Cafe to kickstart my last day in Savannah. The coffee machine was broken in my Airbnb (new one was on the way), so they offered me a free cup at the shop below. The waffles smelled good, but I had another restaurant in mind for breakfast, so I didn’t get any. I hope to try it another time if I’m back in town. I headed out with my coffee to Forsyth Park, which was about a 10 minute walk from my airbnb. It’s a very lovely park with the prettiest southern trees. I walked around a bit, saw a fountain, and listened to some people playing music.
After walking around, I ate at Collins Quarter at Forsyth on the patio. The avocado toast caught my eye and it was very big. The restaurant is a great place to people/dog watch in the park. I met the cutest little lab Lara, who was hoping for some nice food drops from her owner. There’s another location of Collins Quarter Downtown, not sure if it would’ve been as fun and nice as the one in the park; however, definitely a place to go to in Savannah!

No time to waste, I wondered back towards the direction of my Airbnb. House tours are pretty popular in Savannah and my friend had recommended the Mercer House and the Sorrel-Weed House. The Mercer House was the closest from Forsyth Park, so I navigated that way. While you couldn’t take photos/videos inside, the house is probably most known from the movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (which I’ve never seen). Mr. James William was a big part in the preservation of Savannah, which was interesting to see all the different works of art that he collected over the years. If you’re interested in some of the background of someone who was dedicated to keeping Savannah historical, I would definitely recommend.

Being the ambitious person I am, I thought it was a good idea to go tour another house. I enjoy museums, but it can be a lot after not sleeping very well. But I continued on to the Sorrel-Weed House! This was actually a stop on my ghost tour, but we didn’t get to go inside. The tour I did in the middle of the day was mainly about the architecture and things you could find in it. I was probably more intrigued on the scandal that happened here, but figure I could at least walk in and listen about the history. Seemed like people back in the day did some sketchy things.. case in point the doctor here who thought he could fix people.. but only made it worst??? It was not as creepy as it was at night but still weird given everything that had happened here.
Once the tour was over, I ventured over to Leopold’s Ice Cream, an ice cream shop founded in 1919. A couple of friends had recommended coming here and well, what do you know, there is a huge line outside of it. When you’re travelling alone, lines aren’t really a big deal to me. I generally will wait in them (like the one time I went to Hattie B’s in Nashville and waited 2 hours for hot chicken); however, I definitely get why people wouldn’t. Was it worth the wait? I think so! It probably took about 30 minutes to get in and the ice cream was so good, especially on this hot day. I got a scoop of coffee and a scoop of honey almond & cream in a cone. It was pretty big and as a protip, I learned you could do a kids cone with two scoops. Something I’ll definitely do next time I’m there!
The Savannah food and drink tour continues… after finishing my ice cream, I decided to walk towards one of the many rooftop bars my friend Raul recommended. Unluckily for me, it didn’t open til 5. So, I wondered around the riverfront and found this outdoor bbq bar, District Smokehouse. I grabbed a peach cocktail and some mac & cheese to get me through til I was actually hungry. In the theme of my Savannah trip, the bartenders were so friendly and the people visiting like me!

After finishing that cocktail, I headed over to Electric Moon Skytop Lounge and Moon Deck. This rooftop bar had great views of the river and bridge. It wasn’t too crazy on a Tuesday at 5 PM. I didn’t get any food, but did try the Blackout signature cocktail. This probably would’ve been more fun had I sat at the bar instead of the patio looking over the river, but the views were nice.

I closed out after that cocktail and headed over to the Alida Hotel to go to the Lost Square. The Lost Square had a Mean Girls cocktail menu that had piqued my interest. It did not disappoint!! Shoutout to my favorite bartender of the trip, Billy! If you’re in Savannah, I would definitely recommend coming here and have Billy make you cocktails. What I thought was a one drink and head home place, I stayed for a few hours and even caught the sunset. Apparently, the manager thought it was a cool idea to have a themed cocktail menu and you know what it, it most certainly was! You really can’t go wrong with any of the cocktails and I had like 4 of them haha. I did grab a caesar salad, while I was here. It wasn’t the most glamarous dinner, but like I mentioned earlier, there wasn’t much open!
After all those drinks, it was time for me to walk home and rest a little bit. I watched an episode of Lucifer, since the new season had just been released on Netflix. To top off my last night in Savannah, Billy the Bartender had mentioned that there was some live music at this Irish pub that was near my Airbnb. I invited my new friend Gabs (from the Ghost Tour) and ventured over to McDonough’s. It was very lively for a Tuesday and we had some fun music to go with it. We had a couple of cocktails and even Billy showed up later! So much fun hanging with the “locals”! All fun things must come to an end and my 8 AM train was looming over me. This was my first solo trip since 2019 and I wasn’t sure how it was going to be. So, Savannah thanks for being fun, welcoming, and safe!
If you made it this far, thanks for letting me ramble. On to the next city!
